Plus ça Change

Since January 2000 I have been photographing Weddings virtually full-time, with occasional Portrait and Corporate work where I could fit them in. I’ve been very fortunate to have enjoyed every wedding with wonderful couples, families and guests, at some beautiful venues and others at more modest ones, and not had any complaints from Brides or Husbands.

There were torrential rainy days, scorching hot summer days, and biting cold winter days, but each a challenge for photography and myself.

During those 15 years, Wedding photography itself changed dramatically, particularly with using digital cameras instead of film, allowing tremendous real-time flexibility for each shot if required. With this, an explosion occurred in Wedding Albums that could now be designed on a computer using full spread, multi photos per page, all bound in the most exquisite covers and presentation boxes. All the photographs could be burned to a CD/DVD or USB Memory stick in a presentation box, and uploaded to my password protected online viewing and purchasing Galleries.

In addition, a relaxation in the Wedding Licensing Laws, allowed venues other than Churches or Register Offices to be licensed for Wedding Ceremonies, so now the Ceremony and the Reception were often held at the same place, some which proposed quite a challenge in which to get a decently lit photograph.

Modern Wedding photography is very time intensive, not just the day itself, but meetings before, venue reconnaissance, photograph editing and processing, album design and printing, gallery uploading, making multiple backups of the photographs and delivery afterwards. So by the time I’d finished one wedding, it was time to prepare for the next, and even more intense with back to back weddings, leaving little time for other photography projects or relaxation!

In June 2015, I decided that I would significantly reduce Wedding Photography starting from 1st January 2016. This would allow me to concentrate on projects that I’d not really had time to do in depth since year 2000.

So my 2016 will be based on the following:

  • Working more with Models in studios and on location.
  • Themed shoots, including fashion, equine, food, daytime and night time
  • Corporate work including selected charitable shoots
  • Expand my ‘Cambridge Photo Walks’ to include other destinations
  • Expand my Street photography and my ’60 In the City’ shoots in Cambridge to other destinations
  • Continue my ‘Night Shoots’ in Cambridge and other destinations
  • Continue with Camera Workshops
  • A handful of exclusive Weddings

As 2016 is a Leap Year, I have an extra day to fit in something else!
